On Ep. 40 of LexxxTalkAboutIt Alexis J talks with a talented young black millennial artist by the name of Janel Young. Janel is a Pittsburgh native and talks about how she landed a 9-5 in New York after college, a job she eventually left to become a full-time artist. Janel’s artwork has been recognized both locally and internationally, including AfroPunk.com, Ebony Magazine’s Artist of the Week, Blavity’s Los Angeles art gallery, The Apollo Harlem Cultural Connect, CultureFace.com, The Experience Magazine, The New Pittsburgh Courier, and RAW Artists shows in New York City and Sydney, Australia. She talks about her latest large-scale project that brought her back to her hometown to brighten her old neighborhood, Beltzhoover, with an outdoor basketball court mural coined the “Home Court Advantage” project – the first art court in Pittsburgh.
Plus we ask:
- How did Janel take the leap of faith and quit her 9-5 to pursue her passion full time?
- What has the transition been like as a creative living back in Pittsburgh after leaving New York?
- What is the danger in always asking a creative person “What’s next for you?”
Let’s talk about it!
